TM 9-2320-365-101-15. ENGINE AIR INTAKE SYSTEMFigure 1-10. Engine Air Intake SystemThe Engine Air Intake System consists of a dry-type intake air cleaner (1, Figure 1-10),turbocharger (2), and a Charge Air Cooler (CAC) (3). The turbocharger increases enginehorsepower by delivering a higher volume of air to the engine. The turbochargercompresses the air and delivers it to the CAC. The air flows through the CAC which coolsthe air before it is delivered to the engine cylinders. The air aspiration tubes (4) pass thecooled and compressed air to the engine inlet manifold (5). The compressed air/fuelmixture allows more complete burning of the fuel. The result is an increase in horsepowerand lower emissions.1-34
